Jonny Wilkinson rules out World Cup coaching role with England

England legend Jonny Wilkinson has ruled out a potential role as a kicking consultant with Stuart Lancaster's side in the build-up to this year's World Cup.

The Sky Academy Ambassador has been linked with Lancaster's coaching set-up - 12 years after the fly-half's drop-goal kicked the team to glory in the 2003 tournament against hosts Australia.

Wilkinson, who is a part-time coach with Toulon and a World Cup ambassador, has said there is no coaching role in the offing although he hinted that his allegiance lies with his country and would 'love' to help.

I'm not involved in any way - unfortunately it's something that has been misreported.

"I'm not involved in any way - unfortunately it's something that has been misreported, " 35-year-old Wilkinson told Sky Sports News HQ.

"I love the England set-up and I love the boys, but it's not my job. My job is to help whoever and however I possibly can and obviously my allegiance lies with my country and also those guys because they're great guys. So I'd love to, but I'm not coaching there, I'm not involved in any way."

Wilkinson, who scored 1,179 points in 91 caps for England, was coy over their chances at the World Cup, which gets under way in September, but believes they have the tools to go deep into the tournament.

"You might not choose to bet against England, but it would take a brave decision to bet against them.

"England have got it all, they got that balance. There's a lot of responsibility in these next coming months to pick up the pace and pick up the intensity because that's what's going to count in the end."

Amazing Jonny

Meanwhile, Mike Brown says England would welcome Wilkinson on the coaching team if he was to be offered a role.

Harlequins full-back Brown believes Wilkinson would be a welcome addition to Lancaster's team, saying: "It would be amazing to work with somebody like that.

"His stature in the game is second to none and amazing. We all aspire to be like him and win what he's won. For him to come in and give us his knowledge, his experiences and help us in any way would be unbelievable.

"We would relish that should he do it."
