Alastair Kellock was the Guinness Pro 12 Man of the Match against Edinburgh after their 16-6 win

Glasgow captain Alastair Kellock hailed his side's defence after the Warriors climbed back to the top of the Guinness PRO12 table thanks to a 16-6 victory over Edinburgh.

No 8 Josh Strauss scored the only try of the match while Duncan Weir kicked 11 points for Glasgow. Sam Hidalgo-Clyne and Tom Heathcote kicked a penalty apiece for Edinburgh’s points.

The margin of the win means that all is still to play for as to the destiny of the 1872 Cup when the teams meet again next Friday at Murrayfield.

"Edinburgh had a good first half and we expected their physicality, so our defence had to be outstanding, and it was," said Kellock.

"The boys were not just tackling, that was tackling with bite."

Lock Kellock was given the man-of-the-match award but said his line out job had not been difficult and instead paid tribute to Glasgow hooker Pat McArthur.

"His basics are so good, he made the line out easy for me," Kellock said.

Kellock also highlighted the play of centre Peter Horne who was the link man for Glasgow's try, between Sean Lamont and Strauss.

He said: "He has outstanding qualities: passing, speed, physicality – these are the qualities that win you games."

Costly errors

Disappointed Edinburgh coach Alan Solomons admitted errors at crucial times had proved costly.

"We turned over to much ball and as a result our field position suffered,” said Solomons.

"One or two errors cost us dearly. Tommy Brown is an excellent tackler but he got bowled over."

However, Solomons believes Edinburgh can overhaul the 10-point deficit in the return leg.

"It is not an impossible task, if we cut down on errors," he added.
