Montpellier president Mohed Altrad has announced that forwards coach Mario Ledesma has resigned following the Top 14 club's poor start to the season.

Ledesma has stepped down following consecutive defeats at La Rochelle and at home to Brive that has seen Montpellier, who started the season as potential championship contenders, crash to eighth in the table.

The French side are also virtually out of the running for a place in the European Cup quarter-finals after successive defeats to Toulouse and Glasgow Warriors

Ledesma, a former Argentine international and an assistant to head coach Fabien Galthie, joined the club in 2012 and in June of this year extended his contract until 2017.

Altrad issued a statement saying: "Forwards coach Mario Ledesma has informed me of his decision to step down from his post with immediate effect.

"This brave decision clearly shows Mario is prepared to shoulder his possible share of responsibility."
