Scotland gave the home fans a boost by winning through to the quarter-finals of the Glasgow Sevens on Saturday.

Stephen Gemmell's side saw off Australia 19-7, Spain 33-12 and the United States 26-0 to top Pool D and qualify for the quarter-finals of IRB World Sevens series for the first time since Dubai in November.

Scotland will stage the Commonwealth Games sevens tournament in Glasgow later this summer and Gemmell was pleased to give the home crowd something to cheer about ahead of the spectacle.

He said: "It is very special to do it in front of the home crowd and even more pleasing to do it with three wins.

"The crowd were wonderful, we had a responsibility and we need to keep building as we have a home Commonwealth Games ahead in July. I would have bitten your hand off with this situation."

Scotland will next take on South Africa on Sunday in the Cup quarter-finals, with series leaders New Zealand facing Australia, England playing Fiji and Canada taking on Kenya.

Canada and England both posted wins over France and Japan and drew 7-7 with each other to qualify from Pool B, while Fiji beat Kenya, Wales and Argentina to top Pool C.

The Kiwis went through Saturday unbeaten, seeing off title-rivals South Africa, Portugal and Samoa in Pool A, with All Blacks Sevens captain DJ Forbes also becoming their most-capped player in the abbreviated format at Scotstoun Stadium.

He said: "It's pretty special, I never thought I would be around this long. It is a team sport, the hard work that everyone else does helps me do my bit."

The 2013/14 Sevens Series concludes next week in London.
