Wasps wing Tom Varndell is facing another spell on the sidelines after suffering a ruptured biceps injury for the second time this season.

The 28-year-old, who was forced to withdraw from the England Saxons squad for Saturday's game against the Ireland Wolfhounds, is to undergo surgery.

Wasps say he is expected to be absent for around 12 weeks following the injury suffered during last weekend's Amlin Challenge Cup victory over Italian club Viadana.

Varndell also missed the first three months of this season due to a biceps injury.

The bad news of Varndell's absence for Wasps is offset by the return to training of Italy international back Andrea Masi following injury and he will be involved in Saturday's LV= Cup clash with London Irish.

Prop Jake Cooper-Woolley and No 8 Nathan Hughes are also set to return to training in the next few weeks.
