Wingers Simon Zebo and Craig Gilroy have been passed fit to join up with Ireland's Six Nations squad.

Wingers Simon Zebo and Craig Gilroy have been passed fit to join up with Ireland's Six Nations squad.

Munster wing Zebo is fit again after suffering a foot injury in October, whilst Gilroy suffered suspected concussion in Ulster's 27-16 victory over Montpellier in the Heineken Cup on January 10.

Head coach Joe Schmidt has been able to add them to his championship training squad.

Munster's Keith Earls remains a doubt after suffering a knee injury against Edinburgh in European action at the weekend and he will need further scans to determine the extent of the injury.

The return of Zebo and Gilroy gives Schmidt what he says Ireland desperately need - strength in depth.

"I think we'd all acknowledge that there is a need for a real depth," says the Kiwi.

"We used 29 players in total (in the November internationals), but we've already got a few injuries coming into the Six Nations. I think the impact of players coming in off the bench - it's very much a 23-man game and that was made very clear in all three Tests.

"Against Samoa, we got some guys off the bench who had a really positive impact, the Australians and New Zealanders did the same.

"It's going be really important that we try to grow our depth and having the Wolfhounds and Irish squads combined together will be a good little window this week."

Ireland will start their Six Nations campaign by hosting Scotland at Dublin's Aviva Stadium on Sunday, February 2.
