Former England Sevens head coach Ben Ryan has been appointed Fiji boss until the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Ryan spent six years in charge of England, leading them to HSBC Sevens World Series titles at Wellington (2008, 2013), Dubai (2010, 2011) and London (2008).

In 56 Series events under Ryan, England made the semi-finals or better on 28 occasions.

Ryan stepped down as from his position with England in August and he will now take over the reins of arguably the most famous exponents of Sevens.

A statement on fijirugby.com said: "The Fiji Rugby Union has today announced the appointment of Ben Ryan as the new Digicel Fiji Sevens head coach.

"Ryan accepted the offer after the FRU board contacted him last night.

"There will be a transition period of one month in England for Ryan and he is expected to be in the country for the Fiji Water Centennial International Sevens next month. Ryan will also take the team for the first leg of the 2013/2014 IRB World Sevens Series at the Gold Coast in Australia.

"During his appointment Ryan will be required to develop local coaches and the game in the Sevens code throughout the country.

"His appointment is for three years and will be till the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio."
