The Brumbies have agreed to a deal to retain the services of in-form flanker George Smith until the end of the Super Rugby season.

Smith had initially arrived at the Brumbies on loan from Japanese side Suntory as back row cover.

However injury to David Pocock and Smith's own form saw the Brumbies approach Suntory about extending his stay.

"He's been given the all-clear (by Suntory) to complete the rest of the season for us," a Brumbies spokesman told Reuters.

Smith's extension means he is clear to make a potential international return for Australia's three-Test series against the British and Irish Lions.
