The Hurricanes have moved quickly to avert a potential front-row injury crisis by signing Jason Rutledge.

The former Highlanders hooker has teamed up with the Wellington franchise as cover for Dane Coles and Motu Matu'u.

Both players picked up injuries in the 29-28 victory over the Crusaders, with Coles damaging his ankle and Matu'u suffering a shoulder injury.

Rutledge left the Highlanders at the end of last season and his Super Rugby days appeared to be over.

However the 35-year-old, who plays in the ITM Cup with Southland, could now face his former employers in Friday's showdown in Dunedin.
