Gloucester scrum-half Jimmy Cowan has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering ligament damage in his knee.

The New Zealand international was carried off in Saturday's 27-11 victory over Northampton at Franklin's Gardens.

Gloucester chief Nigel Davies said the 30-year-old will probably be out for around six months.

"He's very positive and just wants to play. He'll do whatever he can to get back sooner than that," said Davies.

Cowan joined Gloucester from Super Rugby side Highlanders last summer and has played 15 times for the Cherry and Whites.
