Harlequins' Joe Marler will be out of action until October 5 after being handed a three-week ban for striking an opponent.

Marler pleaded guilty to the offence - which took place during the Aviva Premiership match against London Irish on September 3 - at a Rugby Football Union disciplinary hearing on Tuesday night.

Gloucester's Will James was cited for the same offence during his team's clash with Northampton on September 4.

He too pleaded guilty and was suspended for two weeks, but the ban was reduced to one week given his previous good disciplinary record.

He will be available to play again on September 20.
