Meehan: Surprised by Stevens

Bath head coach Steve Meehan admitted his surprise that prop Matt Stevens turned in a man of the match display for Saracens on Sunday.

Former Bath front-rower Stevens marked his eighth Sarries appearance with a sparkling display in the 20-9 Aviva Premiership victory at Vicarage Road.

The 28-year-old is determined to reclaim his England place in time for the World Cup but Meehan, his former coach at the Recreation Ground, refuses to make any lofty predictions.

"I was surprised he was man of the match," said Meehan, who leaves the club at the end of the season.

"He's still a little bit raw and has got some work to do. He's just returning to the game. We'll see what comes of it over time.

"He certainly has some ability. He just needs to apply himself and keep working on his game."

Five penalties from Alex Goode and a first half try from David Strettle banged a nail into the coffin of Bath's play-off hopes, while victory saw Saracens tighten their grip on second place.
