Carried off: Barkley left Kingsholm on a stretcher
Olly Barkley has revealed details of the operation he needed after suffering a double fracture of his left leg during Bath's defeat against Gloucester on Saturday.
The England international, 29, was carried off during the second half of the Aviva Premiership match wearing an oxygen mask following a lengthy delay while he was treated on the Kingsholm pitch by paramedics.
"For those that have asked I clean broke my tibia and fibula and had a rod with a few screws put through my tib to secure it. Fib will heal," Barkley said on Twitter.
Barkley toured with England in the summer and played for the midweek team but he has not been part of Martin Johnson's plans all year.
He signed a new deal with Bath in January and his injury is a major blow to their title hopes.
They are currently in the play-off zone in fourth place but one of six clubs separated by just four points.
Barkley spent a brief and unhappy spell at Gloucester in 2008-09 before returning to Bath.
