Northampton back-row Phil Dowson has committed his immediate future to the Saints after signing a new contract.

The 29-year-old moved to Franklin's Gardens from Newcastle in 2009 and has established himself as a key member of the Northampton pack.

And he has now agreed to extend his stay at the club, although the length of the contract has not been revealed by Saints.

"I wanted to stay and the club seemed pretty keen for me to stay, so it was a no-brainer really," he said.

"I've had a brilliant two years here so far, and I wanted to stay involved."

Dowson has often stepped in to captain the side when England hooker Dylan Hartley has been away on international duty and last March led Northampton to victory in the LV= Cup final.

Director of rugby Jim Mallinder added: "Phil quickly became one of the senior players in the squad, and shows his leadership skills on and off the pitch.

"I am delighted that he has decided to stay at the Saints and he believes in where we are taking the club. We are still growing as a team, and I'm confident that Phil will continue to contribute fully to our development."
