Australia captain Rocky Elsom faces a race against time to be fit time for the start of the new Super 15 season.
The Brumbies flanker is struggling with a hamstring problem and is unlikely to return to training in the immediate future.
However Brumbies coach Andy Friend is confident Elsom will not need surgery on the injury.
"He's having these cortisone injections and it all just depends on how he responds to them," Friend told the Canberra Times
"He had one lot pre-Christmas and he's due to have one [on Tuesday].
"They normally take four to five days to give a response, but over the last week he hasn't been thinking about surgery.
"We'll know a fair bit more when he comes in next week."
