Newcastle coach Alan Tait has confirmed he has been in contact with British and Irish Lions prop Euan Murray about a possible move to Kingston Park.
The 30-year-old Murray is currently a free agent after he had his contract at Northampton by mutual consent.
Murray had fallen down the pecking order at the Saints, with his refusal to play on Sunday's due to religious beliefs limiting his opportunities.
However Newcastle are now among a number of clubs interested in signing the Scotland international.
Tait, who worked with Murray during his time as Scotland defence coach, told The Journal: "We've been in contact.
"He'll have no shortage of offers because he's a top-quality player, but we'd definitely be interested in seeing if a deal could be done.
"I know Euan well from my time at Scotland, and any club would want to have a player like that in their squad.
"There will be a whole stack of clubs interested though, and there's nothing more to say at this stage other than the fact that we're one of many to have spoken to his agent."
