South Africa captain John Smit is in line to play in the second Test against Italy on Saturday after returning to training.

Although initially rested for the first Test - which the Springboks won 29-13 - Smit missed being at the game after being laid low with the flu.

However Smit has teamed up with the South Africa squad for the first training session ahead of the second Test in East London.

Chiliboy Ralepelle wore the No.2 jersey in Witbank in Smit's absence, with Bandise Maku providing cover from the bench.
