Leicester Tigers have admitted they face a fight to keep Martin Castrogiovanni and Marcos Ayerza at the club beyond the 2010-11 season.
The propping duo are in the final year of their current deals at Welford Road - with the Tigers keen to extend their stays.
However Leicester's head of operations Simon Cohen believes that the constraints of the £4m salary cap that is currently in place for the next two seasons means the club face losing the duo to the Magners League or the Top 14.
Italian international Castrogiovanni, who has made 77 appearances for the club, and Pumas loosehead Ayerza, who has starred in more than 100 games for Leicester, are widely regarded as two of the leading front-rowers in the world.
As a result they would be able to command top fees for there services - something that could price Leicester out the market.
"We have already started talking to them because they are two of the best props in the world," Cohen told the Leicester Mercury.
"But the salary cap will make it extremely difficult for us to retain them and have a balance to the rest of the squad.
"We know they would like to stay and we would obviously move heaven and earth to keep them."
