South Africa No.8 Ryan Kankowski will miss the rest of the Super 14 season after suffering a broken thumb.

The in-form Sharks forward was forced off just before half-time of the 30-28 victory over the Reds - with the Durban franchise now confirming that Kankowski will be sidelined for the remaining games.

Kankowski now faces a race against time to be fit for the Tri-Nations, with the 24-year-old already a major doubt for opening game against New Zealand in Auckland.

There has been some good news for the Sharks, though, with a quartet of players likely to be fit in time to face the Lions in a fortnight.

Captain John Smit (elbow), lock Alistair Hargreaves (thigh) and lock Johann Muller (hand) are all expected to be fit for the derby, while injured flanker Keegan Daniel is also be believed to be ready to at least cover on the bench.
