All Blacks captain Richie McCaw is set for his first start of the season for the Crusaders after Thomas Waldrom was ruled out.

Waldrom, who will be joining Leicester at the end of the season, suffered an Achilles injury against the Sharks so will miss Saturday's clash with the Blues.

That means McCaw, who came off the bench against the Sharks after being rested for the opening weeks of the season, is in line for a place in the starting XV.

The Crusaders are also set to be without prop Ben Franks for the clash at Christchurch with a sore knee.

"Both of them (Waldrom and Franks) could be out for a week or two," coach Todd Blackadder said.

"In the case of Richie, we will have a good look at him - and with Thomas being out, it is likely he will start."
