Melck: On trial

Stormers back row Justin Melck has joined Saracens on trial as the club look to bolster their squad for the season run-in.

Sarries have already lost Wales No.8 for the rest of the season, while Steve Borthwick is away with England and Chris Jack is returning to New Zealand until February 20 for family reasons.

That has forced director of rugby Eddie Jones to look at bringing in cover, with South African Melck teaming up with the club for a week with a view to joining until the end of the season.

Melck, who captained Western Province in 2007, has previously spent time on loan at Munster and can play anywhere across the back-row.

"Justin is here for a week's trial," said Jones. "He's played with the Stormers and Munster and with Michael Owen's injury we're just looking to see whether he's a guy that could potentially fill a space in our squad.

"We've lost Steve Borthwick now for six weeks and with Chris Jack going back to New Zealand until February 20 to be with his wife who is expecting a baby, we're just seeing how much cover we'll need for the rest of the season."

Melck is likely to start on the bench for Saracens' friendly against Boland on Wednesday.
