Newcastle have bolstered their back line with the signing of Wellington and Hurricanes centre Tane Tu'ipulotu on a three-year deal.

The 27-year-old, who is 6ft 2in and weighs 15st 10lb, can operate at inside and outside centre as well as on the wing.

Nicknamed 'The King', he has strong running and expert distribution skills and was selected for the 2006 Junior All Blacks.

He helped Hurricanes to the Super 14 semi-finals and will not count as a foreign player for Newcastle due to his Tongan passport.

Quality signing

Falcons acting director of rugby Steve Bates said: "Tane represents an out-and-out quality signing.

"As well as the physical aspects of midfield play he also possesses excellent running and distribution skills, and he will be a very accomplished addition to our back line."

He will join up with the Falcons squad after the 2008 Air New Zealand Cup.
