South African rugby prodigy Francois Steyn has said that, from now on, he would like to play at inside centre for the world champions.

Despite being just 20 years old, Steyn has already proved his versatility by playing on the wing, at fly-half and also at full-back.

Jean de Villiers is more usually associated with the number 12 jersey, but is currently sidelined with a bicep injury.

And, after playing at inside centre in the Springboks' 34-12 victory against Wales in Cardiff on Saturday, Steyn has admitted that he would like to make the jersey his own.

"I've been pretty much selected all over the place, but I'd like to play centre from now on," he told the Saturday Star.

"But I'll see what happens after this tour. I'm going to have to go back to the Sharks (for the Super 14) and start all over again.

"A lot can happen between now and the next Test season, but while Jean is not here, I'm going to do my best in the No 12 jersey."

Hard work

However, Steyn also said he expected to work hard if he was going to make the place his own.

He said: "It's certainly not a case of the jersey belonging to anyone or me borrowing it from Jean.

"Competition for places is always good, but for now, inside centre's my position and I need to give it my best every time I go out there."
