Italy winger Mirco Bergamasco has been ruled out of action for up to five months after fracturing his kneecap.

The Racing Metro winger went down amid fears of a rupture during his side's defeat to Australia before medics confirmed the 29-year-old's fracture.

"Medical exams revealed no ligament injury, and the surgery was a complete success," said the Italian Rugby Federation.

The 29-year-old left the pitch on a stretcher after being given treatment while prop Andrea Lo Cicero could also be out for several weeks after suffering a blow to this throat and fractures to two ribs.
