Dubai Sevens: South Africa secure convincing win over Australia in final

Seabelo Senatla scored two tries as South Africa cruised to a 33-7 win over Australia in the Dubai Sevens final.

The Springboks won the event for the first time since 2008, but are still two points adrift of World Series leaders Fiji, who finished third by beating New Zealand 26-12.

Scotland suffered a 26-16 defeat to Argentina in the Plate final, with Samoa taking the Bowl and Canada claiming the Shield.

South Africa conceded just a solitary try on finals day as they blew away Argentina 40-0 in the quarter-finals, before another convincing 28-0 win over New Zealand in the semi-finals.

Kwagga Smith, who scored a first-half hat-trick against New Zealand, scored the final's opening try for the Springboks after Australia's Pama Fou was sent to the sin-bin for a tip tackle.

Fou was fortunate to avoid a more severe sanction and made the most of his reprieve, taking an overhead pass with the overlap to tie the score at 7-7 before the break.

Command

The Springboks regained command in the second half as Philip Snyman scored from a turnover ruck ball in front of Australia’s posts.

But Smith was forced to produce some heroics at the other end to preserve the lead, holding up Sam Myers over the tryline.

Senatla then pulled South Africa clear with two quick-fire tries and Ruhan Nel added another to complete a convincing win.

South Africa coach Neil Powell was delighted with his team's performance at both ends of the pitch.

"There's a lot of open space on a sevens pitch and if you can get your speedsters into those open spaces, they can do something for you," he said.

"We're not the biggest team on the circuit but the guys are really physical. I'm really proud of their defensive effort today."
