Mehrtens: makes Evans side at fly-half

Former All Black fly-half Nick Evans joined The Rugby Club this week and picked his All Time Super Rugby XV.

Evans, who is currently playing for Harlequins has picked an impressive side but South Africans may be disgruntled to see that only two of their men have made the cut.

However, probably the most surprising pick from Evans is the man at the top of the list: Matt Dunning.

"Yeah, that was my captain's pick. It is purely for that one moment. Your team is down, you need a try and what do you do as a loose head prop from 40metres out? You go for the drop goal.

"Just for the fact that the first thing that goes through his head is to go for the drop goal and the fact that he nails it, means that he is in.

"Then there is the reaction when he realises he has killed off his team's hopes of making the semi-finals and puts his head into his hands.

"I have not got many South African's in there -they would not have many backs because they like to kick the ball, but I've gone for Jean de Villiers as my crash-out man.

"Victor Matfield, well I don't think you can have anyone else in there. He would be calling the lineout and I have gone for Brad Thorn alongside him as my enforcer.

New Zealand XV

Nick also picked his Dream New Zealand Super Rugby XV where he had to make some tough decisions.

"Fitzy promised me a game of golf down at his local golf club if I included him so that is why he is in there.

"It was tough to leave Doug Howlett out and I am also a big fan of a distributing 12 so Aaron Mauger is in there.

"I picked Andrew Mehrtens over Carlos Spencer or even Dan Carter which was probably the toughest one. I thought of putting myself at 10 and Carter at 12 but they never did that when I was playing so there was no point in starting that now!

"Mehrts was fantastic though, he was one of the guys I grew up watching. The way he controlled the game and made the right decisions at the right time was superb."
