The British & Irish Lions continue to receive plenty of patriotic support ahead of the first Test against Australia, despite losing their unbeaten record in midweek.

Warren Gatland's side suffered a 14-12 defeat to the Brumbies only four days ahead of their first showdown with the Wallabies this Saturday.

It was the first time the Lions have lost to any provincial team since Northern Transvaal 16 years ago - on that occasion the Lions went on to win the series against South Africa 2-1.

But despite the reverse on Tuesday, punters see the result only as a blip and continue to back the Lions, who are currently 4/7 to win the opener at the Suncrop Stadium with Australia priced at 13/8.

Sky Bet rugby union trader Sam King expects the support to continue right up to kick-off.

"The patriotic support for the Lions is huge and they are potentially a massive loser for us in the outright book," he said.

"Punters have not been put off by the defeat to the Brumbies and feel the Lions will bounce back in style."

The Lions, who last won a tour Down Under in 1989, have gone try-crazy on the tour so far, scoring 33 in their warm-up matches and it's 11/2 for them to open their account on Saturday with a try and 6/4 a penalty.

Wales duo Alex Cuthbert and fit-again George North head the betting to score the first try for the Lions with Digby Ioane and debutant Israel Folau both 12/1 to cross the whitewash first.

The last time the sides met was in 2001 and on that occasion both sides scored a try in each of the three Tests with Australia running out 2-1 winners. It's 5/2 for a repeat outcome and odds-on for both teams to score a try in each Test.
