The ACT Brumbies opened up a five-point lead over Queensland at the top of Super Rugby's Australia conference after a 19-15 win over New South Wales.
Henry Speight's second-half try proved decisive for the Brumbies, while Zack Holmes and Jesse Mogg kicked two penalties each in their first win in Sydney since 2002.
Holmes kicked the visitors into an early lead and Hogg split the posts with a superb 40m kick from the touchline, but the Waratahs grabbed the first try when hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau powered over on the half-hour mark.
Holmes landed his second kick on the stroke of half-time, but Berrick Barnes reduced the deficit to a point before waltzing through several weak tackles to touch down on 57 minutes.
Response
Barnes converted his own try, but the Brumbies responded five minutes later when Speight took Holmes' well-timed offload and flew over in the corner.
Holmes converted and Mogg nailed another long-range penalty from out wide before the Waratahs piled on the pressure in the last 10 minutes.
But their last chance to snatch victory went with a Bernard Foley knock-on as the Brumbies celebrated their 10th win of the season.
