The 35-year-old had 18 months left on his contract with the Broncos cancelled by "mutual consent", a week after stepping down as captain after an apparent disagreement with coach Tony Rea.
Gower, who represented both New South Wales and Australia and played rugby union for French club Bayonne and Italy, is due to link up with the Knights next week after agreeing to join them for the rest of the 2013 NRL season.
"It will be wonderful to have someone with Craig's experience join the Knights for the remainder of the year," said Newcastle chief executive Matt Gidley.
"We have obviously had a number of injuries this season and Craig can cover players like Danny (Buderus) and Kurt (Gidley).
"Craig is a renowned competitor and will provide confidence to our younger players. We are sure Craig's commitment and competitiveness will be well received by our supporters."
Gower played for Italy during his spell in the 15-man code and will return at the end of the year to play for the Azzurri in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.
