Phil Clarke's top five tries from round 19 of Super League include efforts from Jodie Broughton, Jake Webster and Josh Mantellato...

5. Jodie Broughton v Widnes

The best teams in rugby can turn defence into attack in the blink of an eye. The Giants demonstrated this when they went from holding out the Vikings at their own end of the field to scoring in front of their supporters in less than 10 seconds.

4. Carl Ablett v Hull F.C.

The play began as an attempted drop goal and ended up as a try to seal a hard fought win for Leeds. The Rhinos ability to adapt and improvise in an instant has made them a champion team for the last decade. The greatest part of this try isn’t the amazing skill shown, but the movement of Ablett as he made the ‘second effort’ to run out wide to the wing when he saw where the ball was heading.

3. Liam Farrell v Salford

This try came from a double-barrelled shot gun and started on the previous play when Wigan fired down their right wing. Sean O’Loughlin did what every other forward tries to do when he sprinted hard and straight at the defenders before twisting and turning his upper body to pass to a team mate behind him. This held in the defence in the middle and helped to create a 2 vs. 1 situation which allowed Joel Tomkins to pass to Dom Manfredi in space. He was eventually tackled just inside the right wing and 20 metres from the try line. It was the last tackle, Wigan were still behind and under some pressure. It took six good passes to get the ball to the left wing before Joe Burgess made a brilliant kick from his right foot whilst running down the left wing – not an easy thing to do. There was a question mark over the grounding, but no question about the brilliance of the play that led up to it.

2. Jake Webster v St. Helens

With the Tigers trailing 10-18, the first score of the second half was always going to be a significant one. Castleford had worked hard to put themselves in an attacking position, and then gave it to their best attackers. Junior Moors shrugged off  two men and then offloaded to Andy Lynch who offloaded to Ben Roberts. He beats Luke Walsh whilst weighing up his options. His kick was perfect and Jake Webster made sure of the grounding. It was a massive moment in possibly the best game of the season.

1. Josh Mantellato v Warrington

This try demonstrated the brutal nature of the sport that makes it so appealing to so many. With the home side narrowly behind, and half–time just moments away, Albert Kelly launched a towering kick that had five enthusiastic red shirts following it.

Kris Welham reminded us that chasing kicks harder and with more determination than the opposition is very often the deciding factor in who wins the match

With no concern for his well-being, Welham threw everything he had at Joel Monaghan in a tackle that saw Monaghan lose the ball. It was rugby league at its most ferocious and sent a determined message to the Wolves, ‘if you want to win tonight you better be prepared to push yourselves to the limit’.
