Widnes Vikings head coach Denis Betts is expecting St Helens to be back on song when the teams go head-to-head in Super League action on Sunday.

The Vikings won their season-opener with a 28-14 success over the London Broncos, but the Saints were surprisingly hammered at home by Huddersfield on Saturday.

Nathan Brown's men are being tipped as contenders to claim the League Leaders' Shield, but they suffered a surprise 40-4 reverse at the hands of the Giants at Langtree Park.

Wigan Warriors legend Betts is well aware of Saints' pedigree and reputation and feels their weekend defeat was their worst showing in the past decade.

St Helens will still be the favourites to claim the points in the meeting at the Halton Stadium and Betts knows he cannot bank on another below-par effort from their Lancashire rivals.

Memory

"I'm not reading much into that," Betts told the Liverpool Echo.

"I can't ever remember watching St Helens play that badly in the last 10 years in Super League.

"I think they'll be a completely different side next week. That anomaly that threw itself up was just one of those things.

"I'll be watching the tape and hoping they can play that badly again, but I just can't see it.

"They've got too many good players; they're too well coached. The response next week could be massive, we know that."
