Widnes are hopeful that Kevin Brown will be able to start the Super League season on time despite having surgery on an ankle.
Brown was hurt during pre-season training and the Vikings confirmed he needed 'routine surgical repair' on their official website.
The 28-year-old joined Widnes on a four-year deal from the Huddersfield Giants at the end of the season and has not played since July.
But the club went to lengths to confirm that the injury is unrelated to previous trouble he suffered with his ankle.
Brown is the only new face signed by the Vikings so far this winter although loan deals with Wigan duo Stefan Marsh and Joe Mellor have been turned into permanent transfers.
