New coach Brian Smith will be under no illusions at the size of the task facing him at Belle Vue after watching the Wildcats ship 11 tries against Leeds. Smith, who has not coached for a couple of years, believes Wakefield can benefit from his experience and turn their fortunes around.
Leigh’s bid to make rugby league history ended on Sunday when London Broncos beat them 29-20 to end their run of 27 consecutive wins.
The Centurions ended their unprecedented winning run just two wins short of the all-time record, set by Wigan in 1987.
The Broncos raced into a 16-0 lead thanks to two tries from Iliess Macani and one from Oscar Thomas as they condemned the Centurions to their first defeat since last July.
Tom Lineham grabbed a hat-trick as Hull FC leapfrogged Widnes in the Super League table with a 25-12 victory at the Select Security Stadium. It’s the second time this season that Lineham has scored a treble against the Vikings – his first hat-trick was in April when he helped Hull secure a 22-8 win against the Vikings.
Not even a power cut could put Wigan’s Joe Burgess off his game as he scored his 11th try in seven matches to help Wigan to a 32-18 win over Huddersfield. The power cut meant that Wigan had to get changed in the Huddersfield canteen but they showed plenty of power on the field as they came from behind on three occasions to seal the win. Burgess, who is off to the Sydney Roosters and the NRL at the end of the season, is obviously determined to leave with a bang!
Danny McGuire scored his 250th try for Leeds at Wakefield, while Wigan skipper Sean O’Loughlin made his 350th appearance for the Warriors at Huddersfield. At half-time it was all square between Wigan and Huddersfield and their coach Shaun Wane’s half-time talk was a little bit more emotional than usual: "I badly wanted to get the win for Lockers,” explained Wane
“I think that's why I was so emotional at half-time, it meant a lot to me.”
