Hull KR head coach Chris Chester expects Ben Cockayne to be fit for the new Super League season following a setback with an ongoing ankle injury.
The 31-year-old missed the end of the 2014 campaign following a clash of legs with Kevin Larroyer which resulted in surgery due to a torn ligament in his left ankle.
Cockayne had been on track to make a full recovery ahead of pre-season, but a new scan has shown the problem is not healing as expected.
The former Wakefield Wildcat has now undergone another minor operation which has left him having to wear a protective boot to restrict movements.
However, Chester believes the experienced campaigner will only two weeks behind his team-mates training wise and that he will be fit for their season-opener against Leeds Rhinos.
“Ben has suffered a setback and will probably be a week or two behind the rest of the lads,” he told the Hull Daily Mail.
“We’re hopeful he will be ready for our pre-season games, but he will definitely be back for round one of Super League.”
