Catalans Dragons coach Laurent Frayssinous has been fined £500 by the Rugby Football League for publicly criticising a referee.

Frayssinous, who was found guilty of improper conduct, has had half of the fine suspended to the end of the season and warned as to his future behaviour after he was deemed to be in breach of the game's operational rules as well as the RFL Respect Policy.

The former Dragons player was fiercely critical of referee Phil Bentham's decision to award Salford a last-minute penalty that enabled the visitors to snatch a 40-40 draw from a Super League match in Perpignan earlier this month and was angered by a tackle on stand-off Todd Carney that left him with a broken rib.

The punishment will come as no surprise to Frayssinous, who said in the post-match press conference: "I hope that my £500 will help the referee to be better next week."

The RFL have also fined Bradford coach James Lowes £250 for his criticism of the match referee following the Bulls' opening Kingstone Press Championship match against Leigh at Leigh Sports Village last month.

The fine is suspended until the end of the season and Lowes has also been warned as to his future behaviour.
