Catalan Dragons have been successful in their bid to sign Todd Carney.

The 28-year-old Australian stand-off, who was the National Rugby League's player of the year in 2010, has penned a three-year deal with the Dragons and has been named as their new captain.

Carney, who was de-registered by the NRL for a breach of Cronulla's code of conduct this year, scored 59 tries and 827 points in 166 appearances with Canberra Raiders, Sydney Roosters and Cronulla.

I’m really excited to add Todd Carney to the squad. He is one of the best players in the world.

He also played three State of Origin games for New South Wales in 2012 and made his lone Test appearance for Australia in 2010.

"We are delighted that a such talented player chose our club despite a fierce competition with other Super League and rugby union clubs," said Catalan chairman Bernard Guasch.

"My desire was to attract a world-class player for the 10th season of the Catalans Dragons in Super League and I think we can be really satisfied today. After Stacey Jones, Greg Bird or Steve Menzies, it’s another world-class player who decides to join our club."

Catalan chief executive Christophe Jouffret added : "It’s been tough negotiations to find an agreement with Todd’s agent.

"We received the agreement from his agent today and we are now waiting for the green light of the RFL who will, I’m sure, register Todd.

"He is a world class player and he will be a great addition to our club but also to the Super League."

Head coach Laurent Frayssinous, currently busy preparing for an elimination playoff against Leeds Rhinos on Saturday, was delighted to receive news of Carney's arrival ahead of the 2015 campaign.

"I’m really excited to add Todd Carney to the squad," he added. "He is one of the best players in the world."
