French Super League club Catalan Dragons have confirmed an interest in bringing controversial Australian Todd Carney to Perpignan.

The 28-year-old Cronulla Sharks stand-off, who was international player of the year in 2010, was sacked by his NRL club after lewd photographs of him appeared on social media.

The Stade Gilbert Brutus club helped resurrect the career of another disgraced Australian, Greg Bird, in 2009 and coach Laurent Frayssinous has suggested they could now throw Carney a career lifeline.

I suppose a lot of Super League teams will chase Todd Carney. What I can tell you as a coach is everyone would love to have such a quality player.

Catalan are in the market for a playmaker in 2015 after it was confirmed last week former Great Britain international Leon Pryce would be leaving at the end of the campaign.

Interest

"I suppose a lot of Super League teams will chase Todd Carney," Frayssinous said. "What I can tell you as a coach is everyone would love to have such a quality player.

"He's one of the best stand-offs in the world and I'm pretty sure we can use the relationship his manager has with Super League clubs.

"It's not an objective at the moment. We'll take the option to talk to Todd Carney when the right time arises."

Huddersfield Giants signed Carney on a one-year deal in 2008, but the move failed to materialise after the player was refused a visa.
