Catalan Dragons scrum-half Scott Dureau is to join Sydney Roosters on loan for the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old Australian has played only one Super League game this season after suffering a ruptured bicep at Castleford in February and was recently de-registered to enable the Perpignan club to sign Sam Williams on a short-term deal from St George Illawarra.

The Dragons say Dureau will return to them next season to fulfil the remaining year on his contract.

"With his desire to play again at the highest level, as well as having reached the quota of foreign players, we have agreed to his request for a release until the end of the season," said Dragons chief executive Christophe Jouffret.

"We preferred to allow him to go to an Australian club rather than a competitor in the Super League against which we could play a qualifying play-off.

"We felt that this was the best solution so that he can come back even stronger for the last year of his contract."

Brain tumour

Dureau, who was named in the Super League Dream Team of 2011 and 2012, played just eight matches in 2013 after undergoing an operation to remove a brain tumour.

He will link up in Sydney with former Catalan coach Trent Robinson, with whom he also worked at Newcastle Knights. Dureau will also rejoin his old captain Remi Casty, who left the Dragons to join the Roosters at the end of last season.

The Roosters completed the move ahead of the June 30 transfer deadline and are expected to use him in the utility role that Daniel Mortimer performed until his release to join Gold Coast last week.
