Denis Betts admitted he was "massively disappointed" despite watching his Widnes side snatch a dramatic 26-26 draw with Catalan Dragons thanks to a late Tom Gilmore try.

Widnes, who have now failed to beat Catalan in seven attempts, were trailing 26-20 until Gilmore touched down three minutes from time, Danny Tickle kicking the conversion.

Betts' team twice trailed by 10 points and the Vikings coach said: "I am massively disappointed because this was a game that went away from us.

"It is a point lost not a point gained. We lacked energy and served up some poor stuff in the first 10 minutes to go behind 10-0.

"I'd like one of our games not to be exciting!"

Widnes rallied to lead 16-10 at half time and Betts admitted: "It was strange how we came to be in the lead and it was a strange game.

"We dropped too much ball and made mistakes.

"But Willie Isa was fantastic with Macgraff Leuluai outstanding and Paul Johnson put in a good shift.

"Tom Gilmore came back from a hamstring last week and has loads of skill and is a great player.

"But he made a few mistakes and it's a big learning curve. He will be pleased and disappointed and that summed up the game."

Injury

Widnes also lost Cameron Phelps with a shoulder injury, with Betts saying: "We are hoping it's not too serious."

Dragons coach Laurent Frayssinous said: "We deserved two points but this is a good lesson to learn.

"We led twice by 10 points but needed more composure to put pressure on the opposition."

Danny Craven was off target with a late long-range drop-goal attempt for Widnes and Leon Pryce and Thomas Bosc both missed one-point efforts for the Dragons.

Frayssinous added: "I am not going to blame anyone for missing drop goals."
