Wigan coach Shaun Wane admitted the performance was not the be all and end all after his side despatched Hunslet Hawks 52-8 to progress to the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup.

The Warriors ran in nine tries to two at the DW Stadium as the Super League champions and Challenge Cup holders made it eight wins on the bounce in all competitions.

Wane did not expect his side to be firing on all cylinders after a busy Easter that saw wins over St Helens and Bradford Bulls, and it showed in the second half.

They led 42-8 at the break, with Matty Bowen running in a 22-minute hat-trick, but they only managed two more scores following the interval as the Championship One side fought to the bitter end.

Wane said: "I just wanted to win the game in a decent manner. I was in to the players all week about starting well and we did. We were a bit disrupted with the changes we made and we didn't finish the game very well.

"The second half wasn't great but we did enough and we are in the next round. We had a tough weekend last weekend and, with everything combined, it was never going to be a fantastic performance today.

"It was never going to a 100 per cent performance."

Hunslet coach Barry Eaton was immensely proud of his players and hopes the kind of showing they produced will help them push on in the league.

The Hawks currently lead the way at the top of the Championship One ladder and Eaton now wants them to kick on and gain promotion to the Championship.

He said: "We were really frustrated and disappointed with our first 20 minutes. I think we were 24-0 down after 13 minutes.

"We lacked trust and belief in our defensive systems, but once we addressed that from 25-30 minutes in I thought we gave Wigan a good contest.

"Our defensive effort in that second half was great and I thought we did some decent stuff with the ball as well. Overall I am really pleased.

"Our league form has been good. We are top of the ladder in our league and we have got to make sure we use all the positives that we take from this game and keep that momentum going to make sure we get that valued promotion spot at the end of the year."
