Super League: Wigan Warriors season preview

Warriors want to prove they can thrive without Sam Tomkins; Super League champions all set to face Roosters in World Club Challenge...

Wigan surprised many by completing the double last season, putting a limp finish to the regular season behind them to add the Super League title to the Challenge Cup. Can Shaun Wane's men defend both trophies?

PHIL CLARKE PREDICTS: 4th

After playing a game of Super League snakes and ladders' last year (when they climbed to the top and lost just two of the first 18 rounds, then slid down the table with just two wins in their last nine games, before climbing back to the top of the winners podium at the Grand Final) Wigan now face the daunting challenge of life after Sam Tomkins. This year will be the real test for them. Some critics have said that Shaun Wane was lucky to inherit a team that had been coached by Michael McGuire and have the 'once in a lifetime' player like Sam. How will his team perform in 2014? PLAYER TO WATCH: John Bateman has the potential to be brilliant. He could be the closest thing to the next Andy Farrell and I'm looking forward to watching him in a team that should be in the top half of the table.
