Winger Jermaine McGillvary knows he will have a battle on his hands to retain his starting XIII spot following the close-season acquisition of Jodie Broughton.

McGillvary was a virtual ever-present under head coach Paul Anderson last season while fellow winger Aaron Murphy impressed for the League Leaders' Shield winners.

Youngster Ben Blackmore is also in the frame to see more playing time in 2014 and McGillvary knows any slip in standards will see him on the outside looking in.

McGillvary, who accepts he can improve in the coming campaign, believes fierce competition for places can only be a good thing at the John Smith's Stadium.

"Competition like that is fantastic for the team, and I aim to prove to everyone that it should be me starting next season. If I wasn't I'd be very disappointed."

Determined

"It's going to be very interesting next year," he told the Huddersfield Daily Examiner. "Last season was amazing team-wise, but individually I didn't feel I was at my very best, and I'm determined to do something about that.

"To be honest, you always try to do your best for yourself and the team, but having players breathing down your neck to take your place certainly doesn't do any harm. It definitely helps to keep you on your toes.

"There's no question there are four of us involved in a real scrap to get those starting spots on the wing, and I feel all four of us is capable of doing a good job.

"I know I'm a good winger - which I'm looking forward to showing again next year - while Jodie is well-established at the top level, Aaron had a great season last season and Ben is really making great progress in pre-season.

"Competition like that is fantastic for the team, and I aim to prove to everyone that it should be me starting next season. If I wasn't I'd be very disappointed."
