Kevin Sinfield has described being named the new England captain as "the proudest moment" in his career.

Sinfield skippered his club, Leeds Rhinos, to a sixth Super League Grand Final title last week and will now lead his country - starting with this year's autumn international series against France and Wales.

The 32-year-old replaces Rhinos team-mate Jamie Peacock, who announced his retirement from international rugby league in June, and admits he has a tough act to follow.

"I'm absolutely delighted. It's the proudest moment of my career; a huge, huge honour."

"I'm absolutely delighted," Sinfield - speaking from an England training camp in South Africa - told Sky Sports News. "It's the proudest moment of my career; a huge, huge honour.

"Jamie was straight on the phone. He's done an absolutely fantastic job. His are huge shoes to fill but hopefully with a bit of help we can crack on and fill the gap he has left."

Sinfield will captain England for the first time in the autumn international series opener against Wales in Wrexham on 27 October but believes his experience at Headingley will stand him in good stead.

"I've been club captain for 10 seasons so I've had a good apprenticeship," he added.

"I've really enjoyed the role, I've grown into it and I've learned a whole lot from the likes of Jamie and Andy Farrell.

"But it's not a one-man job. I'm the lucky one who gets to lead the side out but to be involved in the international set-up you have to be a leader anyway. With a bit of help hopefully I can take the group forward."
