Super League: Barrie McDermott and Terry O'Connor are back with their predictions

The boys have recovered from Magic Weekend and ready to tear into each other once more as they go head-to-head with their Super League predictions.

On the pitch, Barrie McDermott and Terry O'Connor liked nothing better than tearing into the opposition.

They may have hung up their boots but that competitive streak still runs strong and we have found a way to channel their energies.

Each week they will give their predictions for the Super League games; they will score one point for a win and if they both pick the winner, then the pundit with the closest score gets an extra point.

Last year, McDermott pipped O'Connor to the title, and although Terry demanded a recount, he finally conceded that Barrie was the rightful winner.

Let battle commence!

Current standings

BARRIE - 79

TERRY - 83

Leeds v Castleford: 7.30pm, Thursday, Sky Sports 3

St. James's Park, Newcastle, England - Castleford's Denny Solomona scores his fourth try.

Barrie says: Leeds v Castleford is always a tight, hotly-contested game due to the close proximity to each other. Castleford will want to come in and upset the apple cart by beating the big city neighbours, which they often do. The Tigers are in a rebuilding phase at the moment; with Daryl Clark having moved on they're still finding their feet.

They are a well-functioning team when they get the rugby basics right but they don't play very much beyond that. They will need to ensure that the game is played at their pace, not the pace that Leeds want to play, if they want to win. If Leeds get into fifth gear then Castleford will be in trouble.

Leeds were good without being spectacular last week. They scored 58 points but Brian McDermott thought the first half was indifferent, which we saw in the 26 points they conceded. They will need to tighten that up a bit, but that might play into the hands of Castleford. The Rhinos have more match-winners than Castleford, but the victor will be decided by the side that's able to play the game at the pace they dictate.

Prediction: As a player I always looked forward to this game. It's going to be a red-hot night with a superb atmosphere and I'm going for a Leeds win by 8 points.

Terry says: Both of these sides are going into the game on the back of good wins. Leeds beat Wakefield and that could have been a slippery game for the Rhinos with Wakefield playing in front of their new coach for the first time.

Leeds have all these youngsters that are maturing into the big stars of the club. They will all be ready for anything that a spirited Castleford side will throw at them, and show that they are capable of mixing it with seasoned veterans of Super League.

For Castleford, the likes of Ben Roberts and Luke Gale will need to fire if they are to earn a win this weekend. Michael Shenton and Denny Solomona, who has been in great try-scoring form, will both be influential. As a squad they are all showing that there is life after Daryl Clark. Many teams would struggle to maintain good form after losing such a big player but here we are, still talking about the Tigers late in the season, and that's a credit to Steve Gill and Daryl Powell.

As the underdogs, Castleford will feel like David going up against Goliath. They will want to show that having a better stadium and better facilities does not make Leeds a better team.

Prediction: This will be a bruising encounter, and I'm going for a six-point win to Leeds.

St Helens v Wigan: 7.30pm, Friday, Sky Sports 3

Wigan's Anthony Gelling makes a break from St Helens' Joe Greenwood.
Image: Wigan were 12-4 winners over St Helens on Good Friday

Barrie says: It's always a given that these derbies will be good games, there's always a lot of passion and fast flowing rugby league. It's a bit of a shame that Tommy Makinson has picked up an injury that has basically ended his season, but I think Saints have enough quality to make up for it.

When I watch Saints I often get tricked into thinking they will be down and out but they end up coming back without fail. The players and staff are full of self-belief and I think that will be the difference in this fixture.

Wigan were made to work hard against Huddersfield and had a shaky first half themselves, but they did what they do best, which is to grind out a win. Quite a few of their players came to the fore and, once again, it was in the forwards that they were truly dominant, with Liam Farrell enjoying a good run out for the Warriors. They still have the flair and excitement, but they're at their best when the crane is edging closer to the line and the wrecking ball is released to bash through the defence.

Traditionally it's Wigan that have been one of the strongest defensive units, but this year it's been Saints who have had the better defence. They played each other on Good Friday and it was a low-scoring, defensive game, and this week will be no different in my opinion.

Prediction: Home advantage is going to edge it for Saints I think, I'm going for a four-point win in their favour.

Terry says: I've lost count of the amount of times that one of these teams has gone into this fixture with all the momentum and ended up losing anyway. I've been a part of this fixture and I've watched it from the sidelines, and I can tell you that the intensity grows during training. You've got both sets of players who have grown up watching it and now they're representing their clubs, and you've got a set of coaches who are legends inside those stadiums. It's big.

You can't ask for more than this in a game of rugby and you'll get a classic this weekend once again. These derbies often don't come down to rugby talent but desire, heart and passion. You're tested physically and mentally every time the ball is in play.

A few weeks ago Saints were being written off and people said they'd lose to Warrington, but they won. The next week they showed how hungry they were for points when they convincingly beat Salford. They're not going to lie down in this fixture.

Prediction: If nothing else this game will be one of the most explosive of the year. Wigan will have the bit between their teeth and I'm going with a six-point win for the Warriors.

Catalan v Hull FC: 4.55pm, Saturday, Sky Sports 3

Tom Lineham gathers the ball before going on to score.
Image: Tom Lineham scored a hat-trick against Widnes last week, but he has announced he is leaving Hull FC

Barrie says: Catalans have only lost once at home, to Leeds in round seven. They've been scratchy away from home but being in familiar surroundings among their vociferous fans seems to boost them and get them up by another 15 to 20 per cent. They're missing Todd Carney, but you could say the same for most of the season.

The key figure for them is Scott Dureau. Last week he had an average game and he'll be looking to rectify that this weekend by being back at his usual best. The club has announced that Benjamin Garcia is leaving, which is a big loss, but how they play as a unit will show how they plan to move on with life without him.

For Hull, Tom Lineham is leaving the club and though his form has been a bit erratic, he's one of the game's most exciting young prospects. He will want to leave the club in the best possible shape on his departure and you will have seen that last week when he scored three tries.

Hull were really good last weekend and outplayed a very good Widnes side. The first 20 minutes were dominated by the Vikings but thereafter the collective strength of Hull was in full force. I thought that Gareth Ellis and Mark Minichiello on the edges were superb and they were the difference on the day. This weekend I see them helping Hull to another win.

Prediction: The home form of the Dragons is stubborn, but I'm calling Hull FC to get over it with a 10-point victory.

Terry says: Catalans have been in mercurial form so far this season; at times they've looked unstoppable, and other times they have been well below average. The coaches and fans must be getting frustrated because they haven't backed up any performance with another the week after. They've got some absolute warriors in their side though, none more so than Zeb Taia. He's been immense every single week that I've watched him.

It will be a big challenge for them against a red-hot Hull FC side who have only lost two of their last nine games, which is an indication of the winning attitude that's growing in the club. The back three of Hull are one of the best in the league and they have led a resurgence.

When Hull travel over they will be spending a good few days together with no other distractions and that will give them even more camaraderie going into this match, which I think will be the difference.

Prediction: I'm going for another win for Hull FC, this time by four points.
