Joel Monaghan: Try scorer in Warrington's pre-season win over Wigan
Warrington secured a convincing 20-0 win over Wigan to set themselves up perfectly for the start of the 2013 Super League season next weekend.
Joel Monaghan, Rhys Evans and Brett Hodgson were among their try-scorers after a big effort from 70 volunteers ensured that Ben Westwood's testimonial game was given the go-ahead on a mud and snow-affected pitch a at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Wigan struggled from the opening whistle and soon found themselves 6-0 behind when a hanging cross-field kick from Lee Briers gave Joel Monaghan the chance to jump above Dominic Manfredi and touch down.
The score remained static almost until half-time, although Evans was held up over the line and Adrian Morley and Hodgson had tries chalked off for forward passes.
But there was a vital score, at least in terms of local bragging rights, seconds before the break when Michael Monaghan, Hodgson and Briers produced a lovely move to send Evans sliding over in the corner.
With Wigan lacking the attacking threat of Sam Tomkins, Pat Richards, Sean O'Loughlin and Harrison Hansen, Wolves continued to press after the interval and they had another try denied for a forward pass when Chris Riley scampered over.
The third score did come before the hour when Hodgson made the most of a perfect grubber kick from Richie Myler, picking the ball up off his bootlaces to score after it came back off the post.
They wrapped up the scoring a minute from the hooter when Riley made up for his earlier disappointment with the game's fourth and final try, the Wolves setting themselves up nicely for Sunday's league opener at home to Castleford.
