Kyle Amor: One of Wakefield's try scorers in the 44-4 pre-season rout of Doncaster
Wakefield warmed up for the start of the Super League season next weekend with a straight-forward 44-4 friendly win over Doncaster.
The Wildcats ran in eight tries, six of them coming in the opening 40 minutes, after plenty of overnight rain helped Dons staff in their bid to get the Keepmoat Stadium pitch completely cleared of last week's snow.
After withstanding a touch of early Dons pressure, Frankie Mariano rumbled over for Wakefield's first score in the 10th minute after good work from Richie Mathers.
Peter Fox and Matty Wildie added further scores to make it 16-0 before the end of the first quarter, Paul Sykes having converted two of them.
Kyle Amor made the most of a wickedly bouncing grubber kick to score their fourth try and a double salvo from Danny Kirmond and Danny Cowling made it 32-0 before the home side finally got on the scoreboard.
Stewart Sanderson was the man who gave Dons fans a chance to keep their hands warm with a touchdown in the corner after excellent set-up work from stand-off Paul Cook.
Academy product Chris Annakin crossed for Wakefield's seventh try three minutes after half-time before the Wildcats started to bring on some of their younger players to give them a run out.
One of them, Tom Rogers, wrapped up the try scoring with an eighth on the hour with Mariano denied a second late on when he was held up over the line.
Wakefield, who were without a number of injured first-team stars, open their regular season with a trip to Bradford Bulls next Sunday.
