Wakefield half-back Tim Smith faces a race against time to be fit for the start of the Super League season next weekend.

Initial worries that Smith had broken his leg in the 42-12 pre-season friendly defeat by St Helens proved wide of the mark, but coach Richard Agar said some ligament damage had him down as a major doubt to face Bradford on the first day of the 2013 campaign.

"Timmy is a wait and see job, there is no break but some ligament damage in there but nothing major," Agar told the club's official website.

"He may be in contention for round one but it will be a race against time."
Agar on Tim Smith

"He's currently in a boot and we'd expect that to keep him off his feet for at least a week from the injury and we'll get him back running again next week. He may be in contention for round one but it will be a race against time.

"He's on the back end of an outstanding season is Timmy. He's very much looking forward to it and he's a major player for us. He's very confident, buzzing about his game and we build our team around him.

"It's a disappointment for him but it could have been a lot worse. It will be a race against time but we may well get him back for round one, he's an influential player within his ranks. To get an injury at any time is disappointing but he's had a hard slog of a pre-season.

"He's in real good shape and it puts a dampener on it so it's frustrating but we'll get him back on the field as soon as we can. He'll still be able to contribute being around the place and our physios will do a good job with him and hopefully it won't be too long before we have him back."
