Salford City Reds have been granted a stay of execution after the winding-up order was adjourned for a month.

They were in court on Monday to answer the petition, brought by Her Majesty's Customs and Revenue and former players Luke Patten and Vinnie Anderson.

The adjournment of the case until 4 February means they will be back in court three days after their opening match of Super League XVIII against Wigan at the Salford City Stadium.

"What today's ruling provides is the time needed to secure the investment and we are grateful for the opportunity to do so."

Coach Phil Veivers is left hamstrung when it comes to attracting new players but officials do have more time to find a buyer for the club.

And that prospect could be close, with a Salford spokesman saying that the hearing was adjourned ahead of talks with a potential investor later on Monday.

Reds Chairman John Wilkinson said: "Everyone is working every available hour to ensure that the on-going negotiations progress forward into an outcome that secures the future success of the Salford Rugby League Club.

"We appreciate what a stressful time this is for staff, players and supporters and thank you all for your patience and understanding.

"What today's ruling provides is the time needed to secure the investment and we are grateful for the opportunity to do so.

"One thing is foremost in our minds - Salford's rugby club must continue for the fans of today to enjoy and for the generations of fans to come."

The petition was originally heard on 29 October with HMRC believed to be owed in the region of £300,000 and the two players around £70,000.
