It may only be early in his St Helens career, but forward Kyle Amor is already turning in some hair-raising performances for his new employers.

A winter recruit from Wakefield, Amor has helped Saints start the new First Utility Super League season with back-to-back victories, a superb success away at Warrington in front of the Sky Sports cameras being followed up by a home triumph over Hull FC.

"I made no secret that I really loved my time at Wakefield. They are always going to be special for me."

The prop was always going to attract attention considering his appearance - the curly locks on top are nothing new, but this year he has also decided to sport a bushy beard as well.

For now there are no plans to have a short back and sides, with the 26-year-old intending to continue with his current look at least until the temperatures heat up a little.

"When we went out on Mad Monday (for Wakefield's end-of-season club party), we all got given a letter to go in fancy dress in and I got given 'T'," Amor explained about his beard.

"I had a bit of stubble on my face so I went dressed as a tramp and I haven't really looked back.

"I've not shaved since. I think I'm going to keep it, certainly until it warms up a bit and then see how it goes."

Forward thinking

The former Leeds Rhino was one of three new forwards signed by Saints boss Nathan Brown in the off-season, with the extra power up front aimed at helping them secure Grand Final glory for the first time since 2006.

Last year, Amor missed out on the play-offs with Wakefield, who then had to sell off many of their prized assets due to financial problems.

At £50,000 the front-rower looks a snip (perhaps not quite the right term to use, considering his current grooming habits) but he admits that he will always remember his time with the Wildcats with great fondness.

"I made no secret that I really loved my time at Wakefield," he said. "They are always going to be special for me.

"That first season at Leeds didn't go really well and Wakefield gave me an opportunity when I was struggling. John Kear gave me a lot of game time and a lot of experience and I'll always be thankful for that.

"But it's the nature of the game, people come and go and, when I got the call saying St Helens were interested, it was something I got excited about.

"With the financial situation at Wakefield, it allowed that ball to get rolling a bit quicker. I am really glad to be here."

So far the signs are promising for Amor and his Saints, though their title credentials will get a stern test when they travel to face the new-look Salford Red Devils on Thursday night, live on Sky Sports 1 HD.
