Young St Helens half-back Jonny Lomax has committed his future to the club by signing a new four-year contract.

The 21-year-old, who was named Super League's young player of the year in 2011, has provided a significant boost for the Grand Final runners-up as they prepare to move into their new Langtree Park stadium in 2012.

Lomax was given a regular chance in the Saints' starting line-up after Kyle Eastmond decided to make the switch to rugby union and has been given the number seven shirt for next year.

"I'm more than happy to be signing a long-term deal with my home-town club. Although there were two years left on my existing deal, I was keen to extend it," Lomax said.

"There's a real excitement in the team and in the town at the moment with our new stadium about to open and we can't wait to be playing in it.

"We have a strong and exciting squad for next season and are hungry for success - it's going to be special to be a part of it."

Fine season

Lomax enjoyed a fine season for his club this year and was in line to make his England debut until he was ruled out of the recent Four Nations Series through injury.

St Helens coach Royce Simmons said: "Jonny is a great young talent and a pleasure to coach.

"He's already proven himself to be of international calibre and will grace the England team and St Helens for many years to come."

Lomax, who was signed from Orrell St James, has made 53 appearances for St Helens since making his Super League debut at Wakefield in March 2009.

"At the age of 21, Jonny is already one of the best players in Super League and is only going to improve further," Saints chairman Eamonn McManus added.

"We are proud that he is yet another product of our Academy and has committed himself unconditionally to the Saints, to Super League and to rugby league.

"It's fitting that Jonny is the first signing at Langtree Park as he is a future star in our new era."
